Athena ASSET Survey                 Athena Project

The 2003-2004 Athena ASSET surveys (Athena Survey of Science Engineering and Technology), undertaken by Jan Anderson of UEA, found that women were as ambitious as men, but did not make it to the top in numbers that reflected their contribution to science. Furthermore, if they did get to the top, they still felt they were less valued than their male colleagues and generally disadvantaged in terms of salary, promotion and access to career development.

The survey was completed by over 6000 scientists from 40 UK universities and scientific research institutes.

Results have been presented in Washington (the AAAS), to the Scientific Research Councils and to an Athena Conference for Vice-Chancellors sponsored by the Equality Challenge Unit and the Royal Society.

An ESRC grant has been secured to fund further analysis on this rich data set and early results will be presented at the BA Festival of Science event in Septemeber 2006.

The first report on the 2003 ASSET HE results can be found via the following link: ASSET Survey Report.pdf

Further reports will be accessible via Athena.

The Athena Project

The Athena project was set up in 1999 with the aims of:
the advancement and promotion of the careers of women in science, engineering and technology (SET), in higher education and research, to achieve a significant increase in the number of women recruited to the top posts’, and to facilitate initiatives which ensure their retention and progress in the sector.

Initially funded by the UK higher education funding councils, Universities UK and the Office of Science and Technology (DTI), it is now housed and supported by the Royal Society.
ResNet was the recipient of one of the first Athena development grants and in Novemeber 2002 won an Athena Award, the Pearson Prize, securing £4000 of funding for future network activities.
